Well, the exact same thing happens to me. The holidays are coming, along with family reunions and get-togethers with friends, and of course, it's time to remember those trips and experiences that 2017 left us. Yes, my friends. In the middle of a winter storm, with temperatures of -20°C and snow layers of up to 40cm, we went looking for wolvesOur colleagues at Bialowieza National Park invited us to participate as listeners in a conference on wolves in Polish forests. Fotogario was the only foreign website invited to this very special event.
"Well, we already have the program of the "Night of the Wolves" published. Fotogario is very proud to be able to participate in this event. We are going to have a perfect weekend." (Published in Facebook).
We learned a lot about the behavior of wolves in packs, about the wolf populations that inhabit northern and northeastern Poland, and about the study and conservation programs that are carried out in these forests. These programs, along with the education and awareness of farmers and ranchers, have achieved "bring back to life" This animal was on the verge of extinction in Europe in the mid-20th century.
During the weekend we spent in Bialowieza, we not only attended talks and lectures. We also went on excursions into the forest, looking for wolf tracks. We even went on a small excursion. night march to listen to the familiar (but no less disturbing) howl of the wolf.
Of course, our visit to Bialowieza could not miss an excursion in search of the European bisonIf anything characterizes this National Park, it is the large population of bison, which already exceeds 400 specimens in the Polish zone.
The talks and lectures of the weekend, along with the photos I took of the bison in the snow gave me the idea for this article about animal behaviorWhen we search for wild animals in the forest, it's essential to know in advance how these animals might react to our presence and what we can, should, or should do to avoid causing them any discomfort.
The weekend I spent in Bialowieza, surrounded by wolves, bison, snow, and freezing cold, is one of my best memories of 2017 and deserved to be on this very special list.
In the month of June we take 10 days off "vacation" to tour the east coast of Scotland. In our minds there was one fundamental objective to photograph: the Atlantic puffinThis peculiar seabird usually nests only in the summer months to lay its eggs and raise its chicks. The rest of the year is a complete mystery as the puffins They spend their time on the high seas. There isn't much information about their movements, feeding grounds, or resting areas.

It was a fantastic experience that will leave a fond memory in our minds. Not only did we find puffins, but also auks, terns, dolphins..... those and other photos in a few days after our return home." (published in Facebook).
From the successive articles I published about this trip, you can tell that I didn't just get to photograph puffins. The experience offered much more. Seabirds, dolphins, otters... and of course, free time to rest and eat well by the sea.
The trip to Scotland was one of the most special moments of 2017. A long preparation culminated in an unforgettable experience. I'm sure we'll have another unforgettable trip in 2018 that will fill us with excitement, but our puffin-hunting getaway was one of the highlights of this year.
The month of September was very intense on a personal level. And that was also reflected on the Fotogario website. Our last trip (for now) to Poland revealed one of the forest's best-hidden secrets: the moose rut.
The moose They are very elusive animals. Solitary and shy throughout the year, they dare to leave the forest for only about two weeks a year to reproduce. It is then that the males, driven by testosterone, begin their distinctive song. A high-pitched, intense roar that carries through the forest and resonates for miles.
Did you know that the moose's bellow is a higher-pitched and more intense sound than the deer's bellow?

The most swampy areas of Biebrza National Park are difficult to access. Many hours of walking, dodging mosquitoes and low branches, are required. But it's worth the effort just to hear and photograph that magical moment when the male lets out his distinctive mating call. This trip definitely deserves to be among the three most special trips of 2017.
So far the list of my 3 unforgettable moments of the yearBut if we look back at 2017 I have to add one more moment: The day that we say goodbye from the country that had been our home for the past three years. If you've followed Fotogario on social media, you'll know that we recently moved to northern Spain and left Poland behind.
Leaving a country like Poland, with so many forested regions of special ecological importance in Europe, hasn't been easy. But the origin and underlying idea behind Fotogario has always been to promote and showcase various natural regions and national parks throughout Europe. This move isn't the first, nor will it be the last. It's just another opportunity to experience firsthand other areas of vital ecological importance on our continent.
This article is my tribute and remembrance of the special moments I experienced in 2017 with Fotogario. Of course, in a few days, this article will be accompanied by another one detailing the photographic challenges I'm setting for myself in 2018. But that will be later. a different kettle of fish. It will be our particular wish list and projects for 2018Of course, it'll be hard to top the great moments of 2017, right?
