The Gallocanta lagoons, straddling Teruel and Zaragoza, are one of the usual roosting sites for European cranes during their winter migration to warmer regions.
Between November and February, thousands of cranes gather in the region. On peak days, you can see up to half a million cranes in a single day.
On those days when the cranes number in the tens or even hundreds of thousands, hearing the sound of their arrival or departure from the lagoon is one of the most breathtaking experiences in nature.
We’ll spend a whole weekend exploring the lagoons of the Gallocanta basin while practising different photography techniques and improving the composition of our photos.
As well as enjoying the company of its most famous residents, the cranes, we’ll be able to spot flamingos, birds of prey, riverside and woodland birds, and some of the mammals that roam the surrounding area.
We’ll make the most of the beautiful, incredible light at sunrise and sunset at this time of year, as well as any weather conditions we might encounter, such as fog, rain or even snow.
Throughout the weekend, we’ll visit different locations, without forgetting the villages around the Gallocanta basin and their customs, culture and traditions.
Enjoy this special photography getaway as you witness one of the largest migrations in Europe.
From the meeting point, we’ll drive along well-maintained forest tracks around the Gallocanta lagoon and reach some of the best areas and observation spots.
During the weekend, we’ll explore the area around the main lagoon and nearby lagoons to discover the best photography spots in the region.
Keep in mind that this activity takes place during sunrise, or the sunset. The Gallocanta region is especially cold in winter, so make sure to bring warm clothes and always check the local weather forecast.
We’ll take part in a range of activities to practise wildlife and landscape photography techniques, always adapting to the weather and to the seasonal patterns and behaviour of the cranes and other animals.
We’ll watch and listen as the cranes take flight at sunrise and return to their roost at sunset, making the most of the lagoon’s special light at these times of day to capture some great photographs.
During the middle of the day, we’ll follow a wildlife tracking trail to learn how to identify mammal footprints and visit several spots of particular interest where we can practise landscape photography.
We’ll also visit the villages around the lagoon and discover their traditions, local cuisine and culture.
